Event information:
CLOVE: The Council of Local Organizations for Volunteer Enhancement in celebrating the contributions of volunteers and calling to arms the community to recruit more volunteers in the Greater Mankato Area.
Volunteers share their time and talent to improve our community and help our community’s most vulnerable residents – the homeless, the hungry, the elderly, at-risk youth and the disabled. National Volunteer Week is the ideal time to honor volunteers who are meeting community needs around the country and calling the public's attention to their tremendous contributions.
WHO: CLOVE member organizations, community volunteers, and other dignitaries.
WHAT: Recognize the contributions of volunteers throughout our community through CLOVE and bring to the forefront a need to volunteer in the Great Mankato Area with music, testimony, special speakers, prize drawings, and information on how to get involved and volunteer.
WHERE: River Hills Mall Food Court, Mankato
WHEN: Saturday May 3rd, 2008, 2 – 4 p.m.
WHY: National Volunteer Week is about thanking our community’s most valuable assets – volunteers – and calling the public’s attention to all that they do to improve our communities. The Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network and was first designated as an annual observance by Presidential Executive Order in 1974.
April 27 - May 3 Declared National Volunteer Week in Greater Mankato
Have you every wished that you could say “thank you” to someone who has performed a service to our community? We have that opportunity during National Volunteer Week, which takes place April 27 - May 3 this year. The
City of Mankato and City of North Mankato have joined other communities across the United States by publicly recognizing the week of April 27 - May 3, 2008 as National Volunteer Week.
CLOVE: The Council of Local Organizations for Volunteer Enhancement in greater Mankato is celebrating the week by hosting a first-of-its-kind Volunteer Extravaganza on May 3 in the River Hills Mall food court from 2 to 4 p.m.
Volunteers are one of our country’s most important assets. More than 61 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once last year, according to a recent survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That represents more than a quarter of the entire U.S. population.
This celebration will involve local entertainment, honored guests, and dignitaries from the area. Volunteers and their agencies will offer inspirational testimonials on the impact volunteering has on the community. CLOVE member organizations will be available to answer questions about current volunteer opportunities in the area.
“Volunteers perform countless acts of service and are some of the most valuable assets in the community,” said CLOVE member, Lora Brady. “National Volunteer Week is the ideal time to honor volunteers meeting community needs and call the public's attention to their tremendous contributions. Their hard work, dedication, and compassion are an asset to everyone around them, it is almost painful to imagine what our community would be like without them.”
In 1974 President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the National Volunteer Week as an annual celebration of volunteering. Every President since has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week.
This year both the City of Mankato and City of North Mankato have signed public proclamations in support of National Volunteer Week.
