“Preserve Our Past, Protect Our Future”
The mission of the Blue Earth County Historical Society is “To collect, preserve, and promote the history of Blue Earth County for present and future generations.” Volunteers contribute to the mission in countless ways. Volunteers guide tours at the R.D. Hubbard House and Heritage Center Museum, design and build new exhibits, work with our collections and archives, and help to write and publish our quarterly newsletter. Our public programs at the Museum and Hubbard House are the result of volunteer efforts. Your talents are needed to help us continue to meet our goal of preserving the history of Blue Earth County.
Currently, our greatest needs are:
-Tour Guides: In the spring we have a greater need for tour guides to give elementary students tours of the R.D. Hubbard House and Heritage Center.
In the summer, the Hubbard House is open each weekend with extended hours during the week days. We also develop and host programs at least once a month as part of open tour times at the Hubbard House. Tour Guides attend orientation training and receive a tour guide manual to study and keep for reference. Tour Guides are also encouraged to shadow seasoned docents for repetition, new information and strategies. We are also open on weekends in December.
-Gift Shop Clerk and Phone Receptionist: There are times when we are in need of someone with a friendly smile and voice to assist during busy program and tour schedules or when we anticipate being short staffed. It is crucial to have someone available to assist costumers with sales in the museum store, take admission or answer the phone and take messages. The B.E.C. fair in August, is a good time to help out with our traveling store along with other volunteers!
-Research Center Aid: Help Research Assistant with vertical filing, locating obituaries and maps, newspaper articles by topic, making copies, assisting researchers with the microfilm reader, etc.
Hospitality: This can be just the extra help we need to really make a program attractive. If you like to bake and set a table and be that friendly face when someone enters a room, we may have some opportunities for you.
For a volunteer application, please stop in or call.
